What We Do

We look after water and wastewater (sewage) services in Central Gippsland.

We service an area of just over 5000 square kilometres and a population of more than 130,000 people.

We have about 100 water storages throughout the region including Moondarra Reservoir, our largest catchment. Moondarra Reservoir was constructed in the late 1950s and is situated in the foothills of the Baw Baw Ranges on the Tyers River. This facility can hold up to 30,300 million litres.

The Minister for Water has provided us with a Statement of Obligations, which outlines our responsibilities and role as the region's water corporation. In addition to the Statement of Obligations, we need to work within a lot of laws and regulations relating to our business including:

Water Quality

Environmental management

Customer service

Managing water resources

Service reliability

Occupational health and safety

Catchment management

Contracts and purchasing

Public sector guidelines

We have a number of key performance indicators (KPIs) to meet, which are set by the Essential Services Commission.
They are standards for service such as how quickly we need to get to water main breaks, answer phone calls, and how many times a customer has their water supply interrupted.

More information on these KPIs and our performance can be found in our Annual Report.

Another aspect of our business is farming. We have six farm sites, with the largest being Dutson Downs. It is an 8000 hectare farm south of Sale. Only half of the land is used for farming. On the remaining land we have found four threatened species at Dutson Downs, which we are studying and working to protect.

These species are:

Wellington Mint-bush

Dwarf Kerrawang

Trailing Hop-bush

New Holland Mouse

We treat solid and liquid waste from businesses at the Soil and Organic Recycling Facility. Accepting and treating this waste means less waste is sent to landfill. After treatment, some of this waste is mixed together to make compost.
