Occupational Health and Safety

The health, safety and welfare of Gippsland Water’s employees is one of the most important ingredients in creating a rewarding and successful workplace. As highlighted in our Strategic Plan, the efficiency, reliability and quality of our operations is dependent upon the capability and dedication of our people right across the organisation.

Gippsland Water will comply in every way with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, and its subordinate Regulations.

The creation and implementation of Gippsland Water’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy has been achieved through effective consultation with all of Gippsland Water’s employees and contractors. Gippsland Water has a commitment to a risk management strategy of identifying hazards, assessing risks, applying and reviewing controls. Through this mechanism we will continually improve our occupational health and safety systems and performance.

2005/6 Achievements

  • An initiative developed by Gippsland Water’s employees to control a serious workplace hazard received national recognition by achieving third place in the prestigious Blake Dawson Waldron Inside OHS Competition. This follows Gippsland Water’s achievement of two successive years as Victorian WorkSafe Awards finalists.
  • Gippsland Water continued its focus on reporting ‘near hits’ and opportunities for improvement. Gippsland Water believes that this strategy has led to a reduction in injury rates and has significantly contributed to the organisation reaching an important OHS milestone, achieving two years without a lost-time injury in April 2006.
