The eagerly-awaited $8.47 million Seaspray Sewerage Scheme is now completed - six months ahead of schedule and within budget. The scheme provides more than 330 properties in this popular coastal township with important sewerage services.
The scheme has been delivered by Gippsland Water as part of the Victorian Government’s New Town Water and Sewerage Scheme Program, and features a wastewater treatment plant and a transfer system that links each household within the declared sewerage district to the overall scheme. Seaspray is a coastal town 30 kilometres south of Sale in regional Victoria.
An official opening of the Seaspray Sewerage Scheme was held on 29 March 2008 to celebrate the completion of the town's new wastewater system.
About the scheme
COMMUNITY INFORMATION UPDATE
The Seapspray Sewerage Scheme project is comprised of two main components:
1. a $1.89 million wastewater treatment plant that will treat up to 50 kilolitres of wastewater each day throughout the year, and up to 670 kilolitres daily in peak holiday periods; and
2. a transfer system that links each household within the declared sewerage district to the overall system.
The wastewater treatment plant was constructed approximately four kilometres from the Seaspray township on Seaspray-Sale Road. Prior to the new sewerage scheme, the town’s sewerage was previously managed using septic tank systems, which have the long-term potential to create drainage and public health issues and impact on natural water aquifers.
The scheme introduces a range of environmental, economic, health and service quality benefits to the Seaspray community. Pressure sewer systems are already widely used in Australia and internationally, and provide reliable and economic sewerage transfer systems. The Seaspray Sewerage Scheme collects wastewater from properties in a collection tank located at each property.
This wastewater is transferred via the pressure pump directly to the Seaspray Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment and then used for pasture irrigation.
The Victorian Government has made a $2.5 million contribution to assist with the delivery of this project. Seaspray residents will also contribute $800 upfront, or $80 annually for 20 years per property as a capital contribution towards the works.
Gippsland Water would like to thank Seaspray residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction of the project.
