Developments in Catchments

To ensure water quality is protected within certain areas, we may apply conditions to planning permits or other proposed developments, especially in relation to installing septic tanks and the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994. Some of the conditions may be:

*    Effluent disposal systems must be installed at least 100 metres from any surface waters within
a "Special Area Plan" declared under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, where there is
existing development, unless approval is granted by both the EPA and us.

*    Effluent disposal systems must be installed at least 300 metres from any surface waters within
a "Special Area Plan" declared under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, where new
development is proposed, unless approval is granted by both the EPA and us.

*   Effluent disposal systems are to comply with the requirements of the EPA. For example, septic tanks are
to comply with the EPA's Code of Practice - Septic Tanks.
