Gippsland Water recognised for innovation at Water Awards
Gippsland Water’s Revive Recycled Compost program has been recognised at the 2014 Water Awards.
Manager of the Soil and Organic Recycling Facility, Mark Heffernan, was happy to see their efforts over many years rewarded.
“We worked very hard towards finding a sustainable solution to waste management and it feels good to be recognised for our outstanding work by others in the water industry.”
Revive Recycled Compost received the award in the Program Innovation category which recognises significant and innovative environmental or sustainability programs within the water industry. It was described at the awards as “innovative” and “ground breaking”.
The program involves taking in thousands of tonnes of green organic and industrial waste and transforming them into valuable, nutrient rich compost used by the agriculture sector. By doing this, Gippsland Water completes the water and nutrient cycle, returning important organic content back to the soil.
Gippsland Water supplies 1,200 tonnes of Revive Recycled Compost each week to dairy, beef and horticultural farms across Gippsland. The compost helps improve soil structure, water holding capacity and increases nutrient and mineral content resulting in the improvement of crop or pasture growth.
The development of Revive has seen private sector employment growth through Rosedale based distributor Gibsons Groundspread and provides a valuable outlet to local business whose waste materials are recycled in the composting process.
