Warragul waste concern
Gippsland Water is reminding Warragul based customers that what goes down the drain or toilet doesn’t magically disappear.
The Warragul Wastewater Treatment Plant has seen repeated spikes of un-identified waste enter the treatment system, placing the treatment process under strain.
“We’re dealing with this material at the moment, but the end result is that the treated waste returned to the Hazel Creek can be compromised,” said general manager of operations Peter Skeels.
“At this stage we are monitoring incoming waste to the plant to narrow down the make-up and potential source of the incoming waste. We will also be utilising some specialised equipment to assist in coming weeks,” added Mr Skeels.
As well as these measures, Gippsland Water is working with customers around Warragul to ensure they are aware of their obligations in terms of waste disposal and that waste they discharge is within specification.
“If an industrial customer has changed part of their process or simply wants more advice on what they can and can’t put down the drain, we’re more than happy to help,” concluded Mr Skeels
Customers are also being asked to report any unusual behaviour such as activity near man holes or odour coming from homes or industrial sites.
