Neerim South waste concern
Gippsland Water is reminding Neerim South customers that what goes down the drain doesn’t simply disappear.
On several recent occasions the Neerim South wastewater treatment plant has received quantities of unidentified waste, which has placed the treatment process under strain.
General Manager of Operations Peter Skeels said that the unidentified waste had the potential to compromise the plant’s output to Red Hill Creek.
“We’re dealing with this material at the moment, but it is making our work more difficult.
“We are monitoring incoming waste to narrow down the make-up and potential source of the material, and we may bring in some specialized equipment to assist us,” he said.
Gippsland Water is working with customers around Neerim South to ensure they are aware of their obligations in terms of waste disposal and that what they discharge is within the specifications.
“If an industrial customer has changed part of their process or simply wants advice on what they can and can’t put down the drain, we’re more than happy to help,” concluded Mr Skeels.
Customers are being asked to report any unusual behavior, such as activity near man holes, or odour coming from homes or industrial sites.
