Drouin wastewater treatment plant construction reaches key milestone

Gippsland Water has reached a key milestone in construction of its state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in Drouin.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the $55 million upgrade was progressing well.

“Foundation works and construction of the actual building is now mostly complete.”

“We’re excited to see the project moving to the next stage, ready to be fitted out.”

Plant equipment has arrived on site, ready for installation.

“This includes screens, membranes, electrical switchboards, communication equipment, pumps, and everything needed to run a wastewater treatment plant safely and efficiently,” Ms Cumming said.

As part of the project, Gippsland Water will also install an innovative 350kW floating solar panel array to help power the plant.

“The solar panels will supply up to 350kW of power to the plant, with excess power flowing directly into the grid, reducing our energy consumption and environmental impact.”

Ms Cumming said the plant upgrade – a major project from Gippsland Water’s 2018 price submission – is one in a series of initiatives underway to cater for future demand in the growing Warragul/Drouin area.

“We recently completed the Warragul-Moe Interconnect, a Warragul CBD water main upgrade and pump station works at Warragul’s water treatment plant.

“And there’s more to come. We’re in the planning stages of the Warragul Western Ring Main and North East Gravity sewer main construction in Warragul.”

Work is on track for the Drouin wastewater treatment plant to become fully operational next year.
