Use water wisely during hot weather

As temperatures start to rise across Victoria, Gippsland Water is reminding customers that Permanent Water Saving Rules remain in force across central Gippsland.

Permanent Water Saving Rules essentially encourage limitations on outdoor water use such as garden watering, car washing and hosing paved areas.

The recent increases in temperatures are usually linked to an increase in outdoor water usage, said Gippsland Water’s General Manager Customer Services and Communications, Paul Clark.

“We need to encourage people to stay hydrated and drink tap water, yet ensure customers still follow the rules for outdoor water use,” added Mr Clark.

“Customers have invested a lot of time and money in their gardens and we understand watering needs to take place in the warmer weather. Gippsland Water asks that all customers to stick to the watering rules all year.”

The predications of an El Nino event indicate that Eastern Australia may be about to once again head into a more sustained dry period, and the pressure on water treatment plants to meet demand naturally increases with high temperatures.

The three Permanent Water Saving Rules for customers are:

Watering gardens and lawns

  • A hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, watering can or bucket can be used at any time.
  • Manual and automatic watering systems can only be used between 6pm and 10am daily.

Washing your vehicle

  • Use a bucket, watering can, high pressure cleaning unit or hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle.

Cleaning paved areas

The hosing of all paved areas (such as patios, driveways, courtyards and paths) is banned unless required for health and safety reasons. If stained, surfaces can be cleaned once a season. Use a high pressure unit, or if not available, a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, bucket or watering can.
