As an EPA-licensed facility owned by Gippsland Water, we help businesses, councils and communities reduce waste to landfill while producing high-quality, certified compost that improves soil health and supports sustainable growth.
Our 2025 expansion has significantly increased our capacity, allowing us to process more organic material and deliver more compost to farms, landscapes and projects across the region.
GRO is located at Dutson Downs, near Sale, operating across 350 hectares within the wider 8,500+ hectare property.

What we do
At GRO, we turn large volumes of organic waste into valuable, reusable products.
Through a combination of advanced processing methods, we safely manage and treat a wide range of organic materials, helping reduce reliance on landfill and supporting the circular economy.
Each year, we accept up to 250,000 tonnes of waste, including industrial and reportable priority waste, and produce approximately 60,000 tonnes of high-quality compost certified to Australian standards.

Gippsland Regional Organics expansion
GRO completed a major expansion in 2025 to help meet the growing demand for organic waste processing across Gippsland and Victoria. The project included the construction of additional processing areas, new water and power infrastructure, and the installation of new processing equipment to increase efficiency and capacity.
Supported by funding from both the Victorian and Australian Governments, the expansion allows GRO to increase its organics processing capacity from 180,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes per year, while increasing compost manufacturing from 50,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes annually. The project also supports the rollout of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collections, helps reduce emissions by diverting organic waste away from landfill, supports local jobs, and strengthens Gippsland’s circular economy by turning organic waste into valuable compost products for agriculture and industry.
