Water efficiency

Water efficiency is about using water smarter and saving water.

The Victorian Government’s Water Plan, Water for Victoria, has a clear focus on the role of water efficiency in achieving its objective of Safe, secure and affordable supplies in an uncertain future.

The 2020 Water Services Association of Australia report All Options on the Table, highlighted water efficiency as having amongst the lowest cost per litre of any option to reduce demand.

Water efficiency options include actions that can be taken by water corporations, such as reducing leaks, and by consumers, such as using more efficient appliances.

Water efficiency initiatives can be a cost effective means of deferring or reducing the scale of other actions to address water shortages. However, water efficiency initiatives alone are unlikely to fully address the shortfalls in some water systems that result from climate change or high population growth.
