We’re planning for the future and expected growth in Traralgon, Morwell and surrounding towns with a series of major infrastructure projects that will strengthen the water supply to the towns.
We’re connecting Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale customers to the Traralgon water supply.
To do so, we’re building a new major water main that runs from Dranes Road Traralgon to Black Tank Road Glengarry along Traralgon-Maffra Road and a small portion of the rail trail .
We’re also installing a small water pipeline along Glengarry West Road that will keep some customers connected to the Tyers water treatment plant due to their elevation.
Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale currently get their water from the Tyers water treatment plant. During extreme weather the raw water supply into the Tyers water treatment plant can be quite stirred up and have a high turbidity. The Tyers water treatment plant has had trouble treating this water and we’ve had to truck treated water into the system at times to meet demand.
This new major water main between Traralgon and Glengarry will mean Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale customers will now get water from the Traralgon water treatment plant, removing them from the Tyers water treatment plant supply. This will provide a reliable water supply for these towns and reduce the number of customers relying on the Tyers plant.
The Traralgon water supply has fluoride added in accordance with Department of Health requirements. Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale customers will now have fluoride in their water. If you have any questions about fluoride, contact the Department of Health or visit Water fluoridation in Victoria.
The Traralgon water supply network is being strengthened to meet the demand for the extra customers it will now service in Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale. A new major water distribution main will help transfer treated water from the Traralgon water treatment plant to a new 50 megalitre treated water storage at Clarke’s Road.
These pipelines are part of a bigger plan that will connect the Traralgon and Morwell water networks, further securing the water supply for Traralgon, Morwell and surrounding towns into the future.

Timing: 2025-27
More information
Customer benefits
The project will:
Provide a secure and more reliable water supply for Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale.
Provide a more efficient and cost-effective water supply for Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr and Rosedale.
Environment and cultural heritage
Like with all our works, we want to minimise environmental and cultural heritage impacts.
We’ve chosen the route of the new pipelines carefully to minimise the impact of construction on cultural heritage and local flora and fauna.
We’re using horizontal boring techniques and identified no-go zones to limit the amount of vegetation we need to remove.
Consultation and engagement
We’ll be attending local events to give customers the chance to ask questions and learn why this project is important to securing the water supply for these towns into the future. Keep an eye out on this page and our social media pages for updates.
We’ll be engaging with nearby residents to keep them up to date on construction.
We’re regularly consulting with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
We welcome direct comments and enquiries from the community at any time.
Project timing
We expect this project to be complete by 2027-28.
