Water leak program

Update – Warragul and Drouin water leak program complete

We completed this water leak program from January to July where we inspected 425km of water main across Warragul and Drouin.

We found and repaired 99 network leaks.

We also found 29 customer leaks that we notified them about.

Without this program, many of these leaks could have gone undetected for some time. It allowed us to proactively find leaks that were concealed or difficult-to-trace.

Water is precious. With drier conditions predicted, it’s important we do everything we can to not waste a drop.

What we’ve learnt from this program will help us better manage leaks across our entire service area into the future.

What we're doing

We’re checking for water leaks around Warragul, Drouin, Buln Buln, Nilma, Darnum, Jindivick, Longwarry North and Rokeby using an innovative new technology.

Water is a precious and finite resource. Identifying and fixing water leaks means we can save water and reduce operating costs which ultimately keeps bills down.

A specialist contractor, Aqua Analytics, will complete the works on our behalf. They will carry Gippsland Water ID.

The specialist contractor will use acoustic “listening” technology to identify leaks by surveying on all accessible water main fittings and connections, including customer water meters.

Timeline

We'll be starting the program of works in January 2025 and expect it will finish by June 2025 - depending on how many leaks we discover.

What happens if we find a leak

We’ll fix any leaks that we find on our side of the water meter. We’ll also let customers know if we suspect there is a water leak on their property with tips on how they can check and get them fixed.

More about the water leak program

We’re starting this program in Warragul and Drouin as there’s been large amounts of water lost through leaks in the area.

If the program is successful, we may roll it out in other parts of our service area in the future.

You should check for and fix water leaks before they impact your bill your further.

To check for a water leak:

  1. Stop using water
  2. Record your water meter reading
  3. Wait an hour
  4. Record your water meter reading
  5. Compare your water meter readings

If the numbers are different, or the dials have moved, you may have a water leak.

A licensed plumber may be required to locate or repair a water leak within your property.

It depends where the water leak is. Property owners are responsible for looking after all the pipes and fittings from the water meter to all taps and appliances. We’re responsible for maintaining the water meter and the property service pipe back to the water main, as well as the water mains and fittings.

Vulnerable or low income customers may be eligible for help finding and fixing water leaks through the Community Rebate Program. Call us for more information.
