Soil and Organic
Recycling Facility

Industry leading and sustainability focused management of waste.

The Soil and Organic Recycling Facility (SORF) was originally commissioned in 2008. It is an EPA licensed waste treatment and composting facility at our 8500+ hectare Dutson Downs property, near Sale.

The SORF accepts and treats EPA prescribed and non-prescribed wastes, most of which are used as part of our composting process.

Some of the wastes we accept at the SORF include tannery wastes, industrial, car, truck and machinery wash waters, content from grease traps in commercial kitchens, milk and food wastes, poultry manure and green waste and other organics. For a more detailed listing of all wastes we accept visit our 'details for commercial customers' page.

We also accept other wastes at the SORF but they are not used in the composting process. These include synthetic mineral fibres such as household insulation materials and content from septic tanks.

Our composting process produces the REVIVE Recycled Compost product. This is distributed by Rosedale based agricultural services company Gibsons Groundspread.

REVIVE is already showing benefits to the local agricultural industry and improving soil health in the region including at Gippsland Water’s Dutson Downs property.

Public access to Dutson Downs is managed through community group’s visitation and regular open days on site.

REVIVE Recycled Compost has also been industry recognised by being a recipient of a ‘Program Innovation Award’ for the Victorian Water Awards 2014. Currently we are producing approximately 1000 tonnes of REVIVE Recycled Compost per week and expect this to rise as demand increases.

REVIVE Recycled Compost meets strict requirements set by AS4454 - the Australian Standard for Composts, Mulches and Soil Conditioners.

To demonstrate compliance we collect and retain accurate process records. This data includes;

  • Batching records showing process inputs
  • Temperature and moisture records
  • Dates showing when a windrow was turned
  • Lab analysis and in-house testing results
  • Approvals for product movement, screening and Final Product Batching & dispatch

We test our final product every step of the way to ensure it meets our Australian Standard (AS4454) and is safe to apply to land. Our product testing is completed by independent, NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accredited laboratories for every batch we produce.

The SORF has a growing team of approximately 20 staff which is made up of Management, Technical, Administrative and Operational personnel.
