More frequent cleaning strengthens water quality protection
Gippsland Water is stepping up maintenance of drinking water basin covers across its service area, moving to annual cleaning to reduce the risk of damage that could affect water quality.
The covers were previously cleaned every 18 to 24 months. More frequent cleaning will help prevent vegetation becoming established and potentially damaging the covers, which could create a pathway for contaminants or pathogens to enter the water.
As part of the program, floating covers have recently been cleaned at three drinking water basins in Warragul North, Newborough and Clarkes Road, Traralgon.
Customers can continue to be assured their drinking water is safe to drink, with the increased cleaning frequency providing further protection for the water supply system.
More basin covers across Gippsland Water’s service area are scheduled to be cleaned throughout the remainder of the year and into 2027.
