Gippsland Water to support biosolids research study

Gippsland Water’s organics recycling business already repurposes biosolids to help create Australian certified standard compost.

Gippsland Water is supporting a national collaborative research project exploring new ways to improve soil health by turning biosolids from wastewater treatment, into biochar. 

The 13-month study, led by Water Research Australia, will study the conversion of biosolids into biochar, a charcoal-like material, and test how the process performs.  

Biosolids are a biproduct of the wastewater treatment process that potentially can be beneficially reused.  

Gippsland Water’s organics recycling business already repurposes biosolids, alongside green waste, food organics, and other organic feedstocks to produce high quality, Australian standard certified compost. 

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the project would help build industry knowledge and could unlock new opportunities for the use of the organic material.  

These findings will help water corporations across the country make more informed decisions on the creation of biochar, and the benefits it could bring,” Ms Cumming said. 

By finding a practical use for a material that may usually go to waste, the project could contribute to a more sustainable and circular approach to waste management.” 

The project will also review evidence and testing approaches relating to the destruction of contaminants from biosolids, including PFAS. 

The study, led by Water Research Australia, is being delivered by CDM Smith and is supported by water sector partners from across Australia.
