During a recent project to upgrade a major wastewater pipeline, we encountered some unavoidable habitat for this special little fish. Once found across southern Victoria, the Dwarf Galaxias is now endangered.
To ensure the project could proceed without harm to the species, we searched high and low to find and secure further habitat for the species to offset the temporary impacts the project would have.
After detailed studies and investigation, we’ve started planning and designing a permanent conservation site for the species at our Drouin farm. The site is home to a healthy population of the species and will be expanded upon by creating shallow pools to provide refuge during dry periods. Over the coming years, we’ll also plant thousands of native plants and permanently protect the site from threats such as invasive weeds, grazing and other disturbances.
We’re also working closely with Bunurong Traditional Owners to understand and protect cultural heritage at the site. This helps guide how works are conducted, so impacts are kept low and the Bunurong People’s deep history and enduring connection to Country is recognised and respected.
