Gippsland Water customers are encouraged to be mindful of water use, as the region experiences extended periods of heat.

Gippsland Water launched its annual ‘Reduce your use’ campaign this week, reminding customers to be mindful of their water usage.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the launch was timely with the recent extended period of hot weather.

“The education campaign encourages customers to put sustainable water saving tips to practice and that’s even more important when experiencing a heatwave,” Ms Cumming said.

“During the extended period of heat in early January and earlier this week we saw demand increase significantly across our service area.

“Following permanent water saving rules, fixing leaking taps and limiting showers to four minutes all help reduce the strain on our systems during hot weather and also safeguard our precious water for generations.”

Ms Cumming said the organisation will be at local events over coming months to help educate the community.

“We will be at the Wellington Sustainability Festival in Sale on Saturday, 14 March to share practical tips about saving water and running engagement activities,” Ms Cumming said.

The statewide permanent water saving rules help customers adopt mindful habits when it comes to water usage.

Permanent water saving rules apply year-round and include:

  • Always using a trigger nozzle on hand-held hoses.
  • Avoid watering gardens with a sprinkler between 6pm and 10am. Gardens can be watered at any time using a hand-held hose, a watering can or a bucket.
  • Water must not be used to clean hard surfaces such as concrete, paths and driveways.
  • All fountains and water features must use reticulated water.
