Gippsland Water preserves region's history with Cecil Inn restoration

Gippsland Water has completed restoration works on the historic Cecil Inn at Moondarra Reservoir, to preserve the region’s heritage and improve the public space.

The recent works, completed over several weeks, included repairing weatherboard rot, repainting the building and installing new windows and trim.

Earlier restoration works addressed termite damage beneath the building. Subfloor timbers were replaced, damaged bearers were repaired, and a comprehensive termite barrier was installed to protect the structure for at least the next five years.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the Cecil Inn is an important reminder of the area’s history.

“Cecil Inn is a tangible link to the former township of Gould and the people who once lived and worked there,” Ms Cumming said.

“Completing these works helps ensure the building is preserved for future generations, while continuing to improve the Moondarra Reservoir precinct for the community.”

The Cecil Inn restoration forms part of the organisation’s broader redevelopment of Moondarra Reservoir, which has already delivered new signage, a gathering place, a boomerang-shaped viewing platform and extensive native plantings.

Before the reservoir was constructed between 1959 and 1962, the area was home to the former goldmining township of Gould.

Cecil Inn was the town’s pub and was saved and relocated during construction - now the only remaining building of Gould.

Visitors to Moondarra Reservoir precinct can see the building for themselves and learn more with onsite informative signage.
