Morwell wastewater treatment plant upgrade enhances reliability and performance
Gippsland Water has upgraded an aerator at the Morwell wastewater treatment plant to improve treatment performance and reduce operating costs.
A new 37-kilowatt high-speed aerator has been installed at the plant’s south basin, replacing the previous 22-kilowatt unit.
Aeration is a critical step in the wastewater treatment process. It introduces dissolved oxygen into wastewater, helping natural micro-organisms break down organic matter and nutrients before treated wastewater is safely released back into the environment.
Managing director Sarah Cumming said the upgrade would quicken the process, especially during periods of higher inflows.
“The new high-speed aerator will improve efficiency by delivering oxygen into the treatment process, helping maintain the conditions for micro-organisms that help treat the wastewater,” Ms Cumming said.
“The upgrade strengthens the plant’s ability to manage periods of higher inflow, while providing greater operational flexibility during maintenance activities.
“Effective aeration supports a reduced reliance on chemical treatment and energy consumption, helping lower operating costs.
“These improvements provide energy savings, which ultimately benefits our customers by putting further downward pressure on customer bills.”
